Not Just Gaza but a Piece of the Holy Land (Times of Israel - 7 Feb 2025)
US President Donald J. Trump recently announced that the United States would take control of the Gaza Strip. This bold and unconventional proposal has the potential to dramatically reshape Israel’s future, offering a long-term solution to ongoing conflicts, particularly with Iranian-backed terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah.
It is well known that President Trump is christian. During his first term, he maintained close ties with an influential group of evangelical and Pentecostal pastoral advisors who are likely to play a significant role in shaping some of his policies in a second term. Regarding Israel, this group holds the theological belief that Jews must inhabit their own sovereign state in the Holy Land as a prerequisite for the second coming of Jesus—a cornerstone of Christian eschatology, which envisions the establishment of a divine kingdom on Earth. This perspective may well have influenced President Trump’s recent announcement and should not be dismissed as a contributing factor.
If this is indeed the case, there is little doubt that the prospect of rebuilding Gaza would attract a huge amount of christian investors and stakeholders. They would not merely be investing in Gaza but in what they perceive as a piece of the Holy Land, imbued with profound religious and cultural significance.
With this context in mind, and understanding some of the motivations behind President Trump’s announcement, I personally believe this is a great idea.
By far, I would prefer to see our evangelical friends managing and developing Gaza than its current muslim leadership, which has long demonstrated its inability to govern effectively in benefit of their own people. For years, radical Islamic groups have harbored grandiose aspirations of establishing a global caliphate. Gaza has become a pivotal region for this goal. They are never content with their current holdings—if they control Gaza, they desire Israel; if they govern Algeria, Morocco or Tunisia, their civilians invade France; if they hold Egypt, Yemen or Palestine they aim to flood England with their civilians. Their ultimate goal is to impose Sharia Law, a system widely criticized for its severe restrictions on human rights, particularly those of women.
This Christian movement anticipates the second coming of Jesus. Meanwhile, we Jews await the arrival of the Messiah. Perhaps, just perhaps, we are waiting for the same figure. I am not being a heretical jew but rather pragmatic with an open mind. In any case, until Jesus or the Messiah come, having the United States as a neighbor in Gaza would be one of the most favorable scenarios we could hope for.
I sincerely hope President Trump succeeds in this endeavor.
