Challenged by Biden, Empowered by Trump (Times of Israel - 12 Feb 2025)
Since October 7, 2023, Israel, Israelis, and the Jewish world have once again been fighting for their lives, their homeland, and their way of life. On that morning, a brutal invasion of southern Israel began, resulting in the murder of more than 250 people and the kidnapping of over 1,200.
The following day, October 8, as if meticulously planned and triggered by the events of the prior day, hundreds of thousands of people worldwide began demonstrating against Israel and in support of Hamas. Their rallying cry, "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," echoed through the streets. The Jewish people had just endured the worst massacre since the Holocaust, yet the world took to the streets to support the perpetrators.
This was neither a coincidence nor a random occurrence. It was the deliberate outcome of a systematic campaign. For years, millions of dollars have been strategically funneled into universities, media outlets, financial institutions, corporations, and government bodies to promote the "Hate Israel, Hate the Jews" movement. Various agendas had converged to infiltrate key positions of influence, enabling individuals to push leftist and liberal ideals while simultaneously advancing genocidal, political, ideological, theological, cultural, and economic antisemitic objectives. For these groups, it seemed like a mutually beneficial arrangement, even if many were oblivious to the broader consequences of their actions. For example, "Queers for Palestine," an antisemitic activist group, supports the Palestinian cause while failing to acknowledge that life in Gaza would likely result in their swift persecution or death.
Amid this backdrop, which was also seriously eroding American society, it is unsurprising that Donald Trump won the 2024 U.S. presidential election by a wide margin. Many Americans had grown deeply disillusioned with the direction of the Democratic administration. Trump seemed to have learned a critical lesson from his first term in 2016: "You cannot drain the swamp unless you eliminate its harmful inhabitants." This time, he is going beyond merely replacing high-ranking officials; he launched a comprehensive institutional overhaul, removing harmful individuals at all levels. Additionally, he dismantled the financial networks that had long sustained liberal and leftist bureaucracies.
These sweeping changes also brought about a significant shift in U.S. policy and attitude toward Israel and the Jewish people. In the United States, promoting hatred against Jews or Israel now carries serious consequences, including imprisonment, loss of federal funding, or deportation. On the international stage, the U.S. once again firmly stands with Israel. Any attack on Israel will be met with a decisive response from the U.S. This renewed alliance ensures that Israel is not isolated, and the fear of sudden betrayal by its closest ally has diminished. This time, President Trump has even offered to take control of Gaza.
During his previous term in office, Trump successfully promoted and finalized the Abraham Accords. Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Sudan signed peace agreements with Israel. A treaty with Saudi Arabia came very close to being sealed. All of this had seemed unimaginable just months earlier, but Trump made it happen. Therefore, don’t be surprised if, during this term, he once again makes significant strides toward resolving the Middle East conflict involving Israel once and for all.
Don’t waste time overanalyzing the myriad perspectives surrounding this new opportunity. As Ari Shavit wrote in My Promised Land about the relocation of certain Palestinian populations: “It had to be done if we wanted to have a Jewish state.” Similarly, I would say today: “If achieved, it could pave the way for lasting peace in Israel.” The path forward will not be easy, and, unfortunately, violence and sorrow will likely remain an inevitable part of the process.
Now is the time to capitalize on this favorable environment. Over the next four years, we must consolidate Israel’s position, fortify its resilience, and build strong, enduring Jewish communities worldwide. The opportunity to ensure the survival and prosperity of Israel and the Jewish people is within reach—and we must seize it without delay.
