When Sound Becomes Prayer (Times of Israel - 26 Sep 2025)
If you live or work near an airport, you’ve probably noticed that airplane engines don’t always sound the same. Sometimes their roar shakes the windows and vibrates in your chest, and other times it blends into the background of city life. This happens for a reason. Both engines and wind create sound waves, and when those waves line up, matching in frequency and length, they fall into resonance. The result is a sound that suddenly becomes much louder.
The human body has its own version of this, especially with music. Sound waves don’t just pass through us, they connect with us. Our heartbeat, our breathing, even our hormones production can fall in step with what we hear. A fast, strong beat can fill us with energy, while a slow, gentle melody can calm us down, lower stress, and bring peace.
You’ve probably felt this without noticing. A lullaby can rock a baby to sleep. A heavy bass in a club makes your chest thump in time with the rhythm. Joggers often match their steps to the songs in their headphones, while people in yoga slow their breathing to the soft music in the room. Sometimes the pull is so strong our bodies move on their own: tapping feet, nodding heads, swaying shoulders, an automatic response to rhythm.
This is called entrainment, the natural tendency of living beings to sync with outside rhythms. Just as two clocks on the same wall begin to tick together, our bodies “fall into rhythm” with music. In a way, we resonate with sound. The waves in the air shape not only what we hear but also how we feel, think, and move.
We are only a few days away from Yom Kippur, when the sounding of the shofar carries profound meaning. This year, as you listen, close your eyes. Imagine yourself in a small synagogue along the streets of Jerusalem centuries ago, and allow your body and soul to resonate in rhythm with the call of the shofar. In that moment, let yourself feel closer to God.
Gmar hatima tova!
