Indifference Shapes The World (Times of Israel - 18 Apr 2026)

Out of every 100 people, eight are bullies, two are victims, and ninety stand by as passive observers.
The irony is striking: through their indifference, those ninety allow their world to be shaped by the actions of just eight. It is a disproportion so stark that it borders on the absurd.
History offers countless examples, but we need not look far back. Today, we see this dynamic unfolding in real time.
In Iran, the regime led by the IRGC exerts control over more than 90 million people, while projecting influence across Lebanon, Gaza, and Yemen, affecting hundreds of millions throughout the Middle East, and beyond.
Similarly, countries governed by communist regimes such as China, North Korea, Cuba, and Nicaragua depend on their ability to maintain power through control, surveillance, and the suppression of dissent. These systems endure not because of widespread support, but because the majority remains passive.
With few exceptions, moments of genuine popular uprising, when majorities demand change, power is often captured by determined minorities. Small in number but strong in will, these groups mobilize, gain momentum, and take control of governments. But this process is neither simple nor guaranteed.
From within that silent majority, a small fraction must choose to act. Leadership, conviction, firepower and public support are required to challenge those in power and open the possibility of a new direction, one free from oppression and frustration.
To safeguard the will of the people, democratic systems are established, allowing citizens every four or six years to choose who will hold power. In theory, this ensures accountability and alignment with the public’s vision for the country.
But everything works, until it doesn’t. Until the majority once again falls silent and gives in to indifference. Why monitor, question, or engage? Things seem stable enough. Surely, they won’t change that much.
And yet, they do. Opportunities shrink, frustration grows, and societies begin to drift in directions few intended.
Today, people around the world must confront a hard truth: the forces shaping civilization are not only political or military. Economic systems are often designed to serve the few. Social values and moral frameworks are being reshaped, frequently without proven foundations or clear long-term consequences.
For thousands of years, certain principles have allowed societies to flourish. We are now discarding many of them, with no guarantee that what replaces them will endure. History has consistently shown that societies thrive when those who create value are recognized and rewarded, while social support systems remain strong and reliable.
If you have convictions about how the world should function, do not remain indifferent. Be present. Be engaged. Act.
Do not leave your place in society empty, someone else will fill it, and the world they shape may not be the one you wish to leave to future generations.
You are responsible for your descendants, just as your ancestors were responsible for you.
