Where Jews Belong (Times of Israel - 3 May 2026)

Do you belong within Judaism? Does Judaism belong within you? What kind of Jew are you?
A LITTLE CONTEXT
The Jewish people trace their origins back roughly 4,000 years, to the covenant God made with Abraham, as described in Genesis. From that moment, both Judaism and the Jewish people begin to take shape.
In this covenant, God makes three central promises:
First, that Abraham’s descendants will inherit the land of Canaan (the Land of Israel)
Second, that although Abraham had no children at the time, he would become the father of a great nation, his offspring as numerous as the stars.
Third, that his descendants would be blessed, and that through them “all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.”In return, Abraham assumes several key obligations:
First, he must have faith in God’s promises, even when they seem impossible, and obey His commands.
Second, he must lead a life of integrity and moral responsibility.
Third, he and all his male descendants are to be circumcised (brit milah), serving as the physical sign of the covenant.
Fourth, he must pass this relationship and its values on to future generations, ensuring its continuity.According to this biblical mandate, the purpose of the Jewish people is not power or expansion, but responsibility. From the covenant in Genesis emerges a mission: to live in accordance with God’s commandments, to pursue justice and righteousness, and to serve as a moral compass in the world. The prophets later describe this role as being a “light unto the nations”, not to dominate, but to illuminate.
In this sense, Jewish purpose is lived daily through conduct, values, and continuity, striving to bring blessing not only to ourselves, but to all humanity.
THE PRESENT TIME
Today, much like 4,000 years ago, fulfilling Jewish identity carries enduring responsibilities:
A Jew should strive to live according to the commandments God gave the Jewish people.
A Jew should strive to serve as a moral compass by living a life of integrity and responsibility.
A Jew should strive to live in, and, when necessary, protect, the land destined for the Jewish people.
Male Jews are commanded to uphold brit milah as the sign of the covenant.
A Jew should strive to pass these commitments and values on to future generations.CONCLUSION
Do not lose yourself in conspiratorial or antisemitic narratives. Being a Jew, living by God’s commandments, striving to be a decent human being, and protecting your family, your people, and your land, is nothing to apologize for. It is your purpose, your motivation, and your way of life.
In summary, these principles form the foundation of Jewish identity. The question is not only whether you belong within Judaism, but whether Judaism belongs within you.
If you can embrace and live by these principles, then you are a Jew who truly belongs to the Jewish people. If not, it may be difficult to find your place within Judaism, because at its core, Judaism is not merely an identity one claims, nor simply what one inherits, but a responsibility one lives.
