Alone Again (Naturally)... or Maybe Not (Times of Israel - 18 Jun 2026)

Watching the news over the last few days, and today reading through the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” a deep sense of loneliness came over me. I was reminded of Gilbert O'Sullivan’s 1971 song Alone Again (Naturally).
Not long ago, on October 8, 2023, I felt much the same.
What is happening with Mr. Trump? Have the markets, oil prices, and the upcoming midterm elections blurred his view of reality? Is he truly placing his faith in the Iranian regime and expecting it to honor a deal?
According to the memorandum, billions of dollars currently frozen in U.S. accounts would be released to Iran, despite decades of evidence that the regime has financed terror proxies such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis. Beyond that, the United States would commit an additional $300 billion toward Iran’s reconstruction and economic development, all while the current regime remains in power.
Most troubling of all is the apparent trust being placed in Iran’s promise not to continue pursuing a nuclear weapon. What is he thinking? Who is advising him?
Another aspect that troubles me is that the MOU specifically references Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. If such guarantees were deemed necessary, why was Israel not explicitly included as well? This small omission deepens my state.
My first thought is what Israel must do.Every day, Israelis negotiate their own survival. Whether facing a lone terrorist at a bus stop, intercepting missiles aimed at their cities, or confronting enemies such as Iran before they acquire an atomic bomb that could one day be used against the Jewish state, survival is never taken for granted.
Then my mind activates its own defense mechanisms and tells me: “What is new about this? For thousands of years we have survived only through the will of God, and we will do so again.” My spirit lightens somewhat, but deep down the loneliness remains unavoidable.
Then another thought crossed my mind. What if Mr. Trump knows exactly what he is doing? What if he expects Iran to violate the agreement and is counting on that outcome? If Iran breaks the deal, the United States could then respond with overwhelming force until the regime is removed. Perhaps this is Mr. Trump’s plan. Or perhaps, despite Mr Trump, it is simply what will happen, given Iran’s long history of violating commitments when it serves its interests.
In any case, a few things seem certain:
-
God has always protected Israel, and we must trust that He will continue to do so for as many generations as necessary.
-
Israel possesses the means to stop Iran if it must. Let us hope it never comes to that.
-
Many observers believe Iran will eventually violate such an agreement. Let us pray that, if that happens, the United States responds appropriately and decisively
